Shhhhh...
This is the best time of the year to visit Brockwell Park's Secret Garden - if you can find it that is. The flowers are all starting to bloom and even the foliage has a fragrance that is a million miles away from The City that is visible on the South London horizon.
The Secret Garden, by definition, is the best kept secret in SE24. Hidden away behind Brockwell House, you are guaranteed to find tranquilly (and not a lot of people) there. It's a shame that the Secret Garden isn't celebrated as more of a community facility, but then the last thing I want to find within whenever I visit is a crowd of people talking crap on their mobiles.
It should be a real community garden, and to an extent it is, attracting all sorts of solace seekers wanting to escape the wonderful madness of SW9. But I bet if you ask most people in Brixton where the Secret Garden is, you'd get a blank face.
I'm not sure who attends to the fantastic flowers. It would amaze me if Lambeth Council holds the ultimate chain of command seeing as though the Secret Garden is anything but incompetent. But I've yet to see anyone actually working within the walled space. Maybe it is a magical garden that just has a growth cycle all of its own?
Plants are perhaps the one area where a philosophy of pile 'em up high is perfect. It works for my wonderful window box and a similar style is applied in SE24. It's an anarchic approach to presentation and who are we to order authority within the plant world, maaaaan?
Although only the size of a football pitch, you can't see from one end of the garden to other with such a colourful explosion of different petals. It makes for the perfect picture opportunity with the selection below only a fifth of what I shot there on Sunday.
An art exhibition was even staged here last summer; The Garden of Earthly Delights recognised that 'the symbol of the enclosed garden is identified with innocence, paradise, Avalon and the Fountain of Life.'
Blimey. Here's me thinking that it's all about finding somewhere to snooze on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

'Hello Sunny Stockwell!!'
'Hello Sunny Stockwell!! We're Your Mother Fucks Dead Foetuses - you must be SW8! 2-3-4 - Let's RAWK!!!!'
Stockwell Skatepark on Sunday afternoon hosted the annual Bank Holiday Jam. Not the greatest name for what is essentially some skate kids and cider heads making a lot of racket, but it has to be better than the Ghetto Fabulous 'Jamm' rebranding of Bar Lorca down on Brixton Road.
The pre-skate entertainment came from the kid with the mic and his mates making a noise that would be deemed unfit for a Ramones demo. But it was rather ace in brashy Brixton 'bollocks to you all' kind of way. I didn't quite catch every lyrical detail, but Fuck Disneyland didn't hold out much hope for the Special Relationship.
Such an event staged in the States would attract shitty corporate bollocks branding by some tooth decaying drinks manufacturer. Bottles of home brew cider were in abundance in Brixton.
It was all rather energetic, not to mention a little hormonal. I was left lurking at the back behind the half pipe, looking like the untrendy uncle trying to get down, Daddio, with the kids.
The kids were alright. They moshed in front of the Main Stage (a little marquee provided by the ever generous and community orientated Brixton Cycles), bare chested with sweat sliding down their six packs (cans, not physique.)
And that was just the girls. Boom boom.
Having proven that Punk's Not Dead (and hurrah for that), the Jam jammed. This involved some rather youthful chaps riding bikes that are unlikely to be passed road fit and with little regard for the Highway Code. I was concerned about the lack of safety precautions taken ahead of the skateboarding event with a general absence of helmets and pads. More of a concern though was the cider drinker sitting next to me who was taking offence at my refusal to have a swig from his bottle.
It wasn't the best Sunday afternoon that I have ever had but it captured Brixton beautifully; a DIY ethos, slightly mad and certainly no knobbers.
Your Mother Fucks Dead Foetuses returned for a 'Jazz Odyssey' session (or something). I took this as my signal to cycle back to onionbagblog HQ.
